Supply and Installation of a Hydrogen Refueling Station using Hydrogen Fuel in the Facilities of NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”

In the framework of the Operational Programme “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation 2014-2020”, a call for a Tender was launched, in 2020, concerning the procurement, installation, commissioning and training of operators of a Hydrogen Refueling Station in the facilities of NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”. The competition was conducted through an Open Process via the National Electronic Public Procurement System (NEPPS) and is funded by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) and national resources, through the Ministry of Development and Investment. MES ENERGY S.A. was selected for this purpose, on the basis of criteria related to the best value for money, economic and financial adequacy, technical and professional competence, quality assurance and environmental management standards, as well as compliance with the necessary technical specifications. On 28 July 2020, MES ENERGY S.A. signed the above contract with NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”. “DEMOKRITOS” is a research center focusing on Technology and Research. Its purpose is to conduct high level basic and applied research, aiming to promote scientific and technological knowledge in Natural Sciences, as well as to support innovation. In this context, “DEMOKRITOS” cooperates with MES ENERGY S.A., in order to develop the first Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) in Greece, as well as the subsequent demonstration of hydrogen-powered vehicles. The final product, i.e. the integrated system of production, storage, refueling and consumption of hydrogen, will consist of five main subsystems: a photovoltaic system for energy supply, a hydrogen production system using PEM electrolysis, a hydrogen storage system, a hydrogen refueling system and hydrogen-powered vehicles with hydrogen fuel cells. Finally, it has to be mentioned that relevant projects can be part of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, powered by the European Union (Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking – FCH JU – www.fch.europa.eu), which aims to facilitate and accelerate the market entry of these technologies, with the ultimate goal of the transition towards clean energy, as hydrogen technologies offer the opportunity for a shift to clean transportations and to the reduction of our carbon footprint on the environment.
