Provision of Consulting Services on Energy Issues in the Municipality of Chania, Crete

On December 21, 2018, the Municipality of Chania signed a contract with MES ENERGY S.A. for the provision of services on issues concerning the electrical interconnection and net metering of municipal buildings with HEDNO. The Municipality of Chania possesses a number of energy-consuming facilities in which significant amounts of electricity are spent yearly, while releasing a large volume of carbon dioxide at the same time. The Municipality, however, presents various possibilities for energy saving and RES usage, especially in Crete, where the available RES potential is abundant. These possibilities, in combination with the opportunities for the improvement of facilities through the available funding programs, constitute one of the current development priorities of the Municipality. In order to meet the priorities and needs that arise timely and successfully, the assistance of specialized consultants, with experience in energy saving, in clean technology applications, in the institutional framework of energy saving and RES and in the reduction of the carbon footprint of building facilities, was asked. In this context, using municipal funding, MES ENERGY S.A. undertook the role of a Technical Advisor on energy issues, through the support of the Municipality in the preparation of funding proposals with the aim of energy upgrade of municipal facilities and of electricity production in the municipal infrastructure, using PV systems with the application of net metering. In more detail, MES ENERGY S.A. undertook the recording of cases and the collection of consumption data, the recording of possibilities for the installation of PV systems using net metering or virtual net metering, the preparation of a Master Plan based on the above data, and, lastly, the assessment of carbon dioxide emissions for the proposed interventions, as well as the preparation of applications for HEDNO. It is also worth mentioning that this activity presents multiple benefits for the Municipality of Chania concerning, in addition to the complete detailed description of interventions needed to achieve lower carbon emissions, the reduction of operating costs and the environmental footprint of municipal facilities. Through this cooperation, MES ENERGY S.A. contributed to the improvement of energy efficiency and RES usage in the building infrastructure of the Municipality and to the shared goal for a turn towards green energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
