Provision of Services for the Development of an Electric Vehicle Charging Plan in the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete

PROJECT SUMMARY

Electromobility is emerging as a significant trend within the transportation sector. The primary objectives for its advancement in Greece include increasing the usage of low and zero-emission vehicles, along with creating charging stations, especially publicly accessible ones, while at the same time developing a regulatory framework for the electromobility market. In this context, a set of measures is being promoted to enhance and support the acquisition of electric vehicles. A necessary step in this direction involves the creation of Electric Vehicle Charging Plans by local authorities.

MES ENERGY S.A. undertook the support of the Municipality of Heraklion in the development of an EV Charging Plan, which determines the location of a sufficient number of normal or high power publicly accessible EV charging stations, as well as EV parking spaces within the municipal boundaries. The company undertook several key tasks to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the project. These include conducting a thorough assessment of the existing conditions, presenting and mapping the intervention area, providing a detailed overview of the installation points for charging stations and EV parking spaces, and ultimately identifying the most optimal strategy for establishing a holistic EV charging network. Finally, MES ENERGY S.A. provided a relevant financial model in the form of a Master Plan, along with a method for effectively monitoring the EV Charging Infrastructure. The EV Charging Plan was subsequently used as a case study to investigate the effect of EV chargers on the overall operation of the Cretan power system.
